Can I put Microsoft Office from my old computer onto my new computer?

I have a new computer now with windows vista. My old coputer is XP pro. Can I take the Microsoft office off of my old computer and put on my new one some how? If so how? Do I have to buy it again?

Yes, you can run Office 2003 on Vista, and no you don't have to buy it again. Use your disk the program came on to install it on the new system. You will need to remove it from the old one though, unless you have a license which allows for multiple systems to run the program as I do. My Office 2003 comes with a three system license, which is really nice.





Now, if you run into any issues while using Office 2003 on Vista, just run it in Compatibility Mode. Right click the program icon, select Properties from the shortcut menu, and on the Properties dialog box that opens click on the Compatibility Tab. On that tab you can set whichever options you need. The main option will be to click the drop down menu at the top and select Windows XP.





If you bought your system and Office came preinstalled, and your computer manufacturer did not send the Office 2003 disk, you may have to contact either the computer manufacturer or Microsoft. Your computer manufacturer should have sent you a CD which the files for the programs are stored on. On the outside case of the CD is a Product Code, you will need to put the Product Code into the setup when instructed during installation.





Again, if for some reason you received this as a trial software package, and then purchased a key when the trial was over, and you lost that key, contact Microsoft to get your key. If your computer manufacturer preinstalled it when you bought your system, (when you purchased Office and they installed it for you before shipping) you should have a CD that come with your system.

*edit* Both XP and Vista has a migration method. You can use the Easy Transfer Cable, or you can do it manually by popping in a CD or DVD, opening the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in the old computer then copy the to the disk. take the disk to the Vista computer and repeat the process. And YES you can tranfer programs from one computer to another.

You can't just copy the files from your old pc to your new one, it doesn't work that way.

The Word, Excel, Access are called Writer. Calc and Base buit they do all the same things as Office and there is also IMPRESS and DRAW which are great graphioc suites all FREE.
Reply:no u cant. u need to reinstall it from the disc. u cant copy the files cz we need to need using setup.exe file which will be only on disc. so the only option to put microsoft office on ur new computer is to reinstall it using a disc

If the Office came with the computer then it is considered OEM, legally you cannot transfer it.





If you purchased the office after you bought the computer, it will be considered retail and you can, re-install the Office,





But in any case, you cannot transfer the applications, you can only transfer the data, and all applications/programs including office has to be re-installed.
Reply:If you have Vista, make certain your copy is compatible with Vista. If it isn't then more than likely you will have driver issues. I could be wrong, but try to install it and see if there is an upgrade from MS's site to make it compatible. I will not be going over to Vista for at least another nine months when they may have all the bugs worked out.

Reply:ok, first of all - VISTA!!!! What were you thinking??? but that my friend is a story for another day. Ok back to Office.... You need an Microsoft office Installation Disk that has the installation files on it. Or you can download it from the internet through torrents. I would advise this because paying over £200 for the Office suite is a rip off! and you can get it free online.
