In Microsoft Word, how do you get the program to stop overspacing between lines?

You can set the spacing to single spacing but sometimes Microsoft Word will still insert extra space between lines that is unneeded. There is some left-over junk formatting in there and I never know how to get rid of it. What's the solution?

In Microsoft Word, how do you get the program to stop overspacing between lines?
If those extra lines always come at the beginning or end of every paragraph, you have Before or After spacing turned on. Here's how to get rid of it:

(This assumes Word XP (2002) or adjacent versions. Word Vista (2007) should have something similar.)

1.Click in the paragraph.

2.Click on the Format-%26gt;Styles and Formatting menu item.

3.In the bottom part of the sidebar that pops up, the style for your paragraph should have a bold box around it.

4.Hover the cursor over the style. A listbox arrow should appear. Click it.

5.Select Modify Style from the list box.

6.Click the Format button and select Paragraph.

7.Put zeros in the Before and After list boxes.

8.OK out of everything.

All paragraphs in the document with that style should adjust themselves.

Now, if you want to carry this one step further and fix the style on the template your document is based on (probably Normal.dot, but not necessarily), do this:

1.Click the Tools-%26gt;Organizer menu item.

2.In the left-hand list box, find and click on the style you changed.

3.Click the Copy button between the two list boxes.

4.If you have another style to copy, go back to step 2.

5.Click OK.

When you close your document, you may see a warning message asking if you want to save the changes to Normal.dot. This is an anti-virus measure, intended to alert you that something has changed in Normal.dot. In this case, you made the change, so you want to accept it.

That should do it.
Reply:Thank you. Report It

Reply:Press Ctrl + A and go to Format %26gt; Paragraph %26gt; Line spacing : choose a value what you want %26gt; OK.

highlite the problem area

click format %26gt;paragraph

in spacing, the default is 0 pt before and after. single line spacing

if you ever work in tables these before and after pt settings are handy to place the text in the row how you like it.
