Is it necessary to have Microsoft Outlook on your computer in order to sync contacts etc. from a smartphone?

I got a Samsung Blackjack, which runs on Windows Mobile 5, partly so that I could sync up my contacts, as well as notes and documents. The only thing is, I don't have Microsoft Office (including Outlook), I have the Open Office suite (open source). Is there any way I can still use these features with Windows 5? Would another platform like Symbian or Linux be better?

I have the cingular 8125, it's also windows compatible, your phone should come with an installment disk which has all the necessary programs you need in order to sync your phone.





outlook will be installed on your computer from that disk, and all the other necessary documents will install also. just be sure to approve it all on your computer if it prompts you!
